Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance from Carlow

Activities

  • March 3rd 2007
Visit to music lessons of Clontarf Comhaltas Branch where we participated in the classes, gave a performance and took part in a session involving teenagers from that branch.

  • March 17th 2007
The group played on the reviewing stand at the Bagnalstown St. Patrick’s day Parade.

  • March 30th 2007
The group was officially launched and opened Carlow Fleadh 2007 in Leighlinbridge by giving a rehearsed performance of music, song and dance to an audience of officials, press and the general public.

  • April 13th 2007
The group was invited to perform in Comhaltas headquarters, Monkstown Dublin and afterward share a session of music with some of the veterans of local branches – an evening enjoyed by young and old!

  • 19th May 2007
Trip to Fermoy to meet and play with members of Fermoy’s twice All-Ireland winning, “Pléaracha” teenage group. This visit consisted of a performance followed by a session which helped to forge musical bonds and friendship between members of both groups.

  • 17th June 2007
Trip to the Gaeltacht area of An Rinn, Co. Phortláirge to meet and play music with local musicians, singers and dancers.

  • 28th September 2007
The group performed as support act to internationally recognised and acclaimed traditional group “Téada” in Duiske Abbey, Co. Kilkenny as part of a newly established arts festival.

Workshops were held during the above mentioned festival and members of Rí Rá attended these lessons given by Mary Staunton (accordion), Bernadette McCarthy (fiddle) and Jacqueline McCarthy (concertina) and Marion Mc Carthy (pipes).

  • 9th February 2008
Rírá was invited to perform at a concert which was part of the “Irish heritage festival” in Newcastle on Tyne, England. The Irish Ambassador to Britain was a guest of honour at the concert and he thoroughly enjoyed their performance. The young people themselves proved to be wonderful ambassadors of Ireland and especially of Carlow by presenting entertainment of the highest standard in music, song and dance.

All members of the group participated in workshops on Sunday 10th and tunes were exchanged. Hopefully a return trip will be organised in the near future.
